This is a museum, yes, but not the kind you spend your time indoors for. 14 Flags is a series of restored cabins and a train depot significant to Native American and Civil War history. Admission is free, and there's lots to poke around and look at, whatever your age.

You learn a lot about history, get a sense of the difficulty of life in Oklahoma before the modern era, and all while traipsing through the grass and under the trees. The kids especially will love running from building to building and poking their heads through the windows of every one. Brushy Lake Park

Brushy Lake Park is in the beautiful Cookson Hills area and offers a true respite from modern life. You can go camping here, take a boat out on the lake, and go fishing. There's great fishing here for bass and crappie, and it's not uncommon to spot turtles around the lake, either.

There are 23 camping sites to use, some of them suitable for RVs, and pavilions if you want to schedule an outdoor event with friends or family. Pavilions can be reserved by calling Sallisaw City Hall, and it costs $50 to do so.

Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge

This is the ultimate getaway spot for anyone who loves nature, so we've saved it for last. This wildlife refuge along the Arkansas River is a beautiful place to bird watch, hike, spend time with the family, or go fishing. For those who want to be out in nature but have limited mobility, the wonderful driving loops still allow you to see some of the best wildlife in the park, like herons, gadwall, eagles, and blue-winged teals.

Kerr Reservoir, you can choose from one of 27 campsites. These peaceful campsites feature such amenities as water hookups, electric hookups, and grills. You can also find a boat ramp at the campground. After a night of watching the stars rising in the sky and waking up peacefully in the morning to the smell of fresh air, you can launch your boat into the reservoir and fish for sand bass, black bass, crappie, and catfish. 3. Hiking at Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center Finally, we recommend the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center at 8300 Wells Lake Rd if you want to feel more connected to nature. There are several miles of trails, including a half-mile ADA-compliant trail that follows Wells Lake's edge. This is a great spot to see such birds as blue herons and Canada geese.
